UNSUNG: A New Performance Brand for the Next Generation of Elite Athletes

Founded by former college athletes and footwear veterans, the Boston-based company debuts today with a training shoe built for the way team sport athletes actually move
BOSTON, Oct. 22, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — The best parts of sport don’t always happen under the lights. They happen in the locker room, on the bus, during early practices and intense conditioning sessions, in the extra reps, the chirps and the countless moments that make a team a team.
Those moments are the starting point for UNSUNG, a new Boston-based performance sports brand debuting today on a foundational belief: No One Wins Alone. Its first product, the Snapback Trainer, was designed specifically for the multidirectional demands of team-sport training. But the ambition behind UNSUNG extends beyond footwear: to build a performance brand that celebrates not only athletic achievement, but the people, values and culture that make great teams possible.
For founders Dennis Baldwin, Jody O’Neill and Brianna Henley, that mission is personal. Baldwin played NCAA hockey and lacrosse at Union College, O’Neill played Division I hockey at Dartmouth before competing professionally, and Henley played Division I softball at Princeton. Baldwin and Henley also held senior roles at Reebok, while O’Neill brings experience in sports business, operations and partnerships. Their time as athletes and industry leaders showed them two gaps they wanted UNSUNG to address.
The first is in how sport is celebrated: sport has become increasingly centered on individual achievement, but the best athletes do more than make highlights. They make everyone around them better. The second is what team-sport athletes wear to train. Their workouts demand speed, agility and rapid changes of direction, yet footwear has largely asked them to choose between shoes built for forward running and shoes built for functional fitness.
“We wanted to build the shoe we wished we’d had as athletes, but we also wanted to build a brand that reflects why we played sports in the first place,” said Baldwin, co-founder and CEO of UNSUNG. “The best teams challenge you to perform at a higher level while giving you something bigger than yourself to play for. Those two ideas—performance and team—have shaped UNSUNG from the beginning.”
Starting with a focus on hockey and lacrosse athletes, UNSUNG designed the Snapback Trainer around the movements that define team-sport training: explosive first steps, lateral cuts, quick stops, jumps, lifts and the transition from one movement to the next.
“We kept coming back to a simple question: what is a team-sport athlete actually asking their shoe to do during training?” said Henley, co-founder and chief marketing officer of UNSUNG. “The answer was much more dynamic than running forward or standing still under a weight. Athletes need to push off with power, land with control and feel fast and secure when they change direction. We built the Snapback around that reality.”
The Snapback Trainer pairs a carbon fiber plate with TPU stability wings and supercritical foam to support propulsion, stability and responsive cushioning. UNSUNG developed the shoe over more than two years through three rounds of wear testing with more than 50 high school, college and professional athletes, strength coaches and performance trainers. They tested the shoe during training sessions that included sprinting, cutting, lifting and jumping, with their feedback informing its fit, cushioning, stability and construction. UNSUNG also partnered with independent footwear biomechanics lab Heeluxe to test and optimize the shoe’s responsiveness, energy return and cushioning.
Hockey and lacrosse athletes are UNSUNG’s initial focus, with products and communities the founders know firsthand. But the company’s vision is broader: to build a performance sports brand for team-sport athletes across disciplines, with future products and initiatives that reflect both how they train and what they contribute to the people around them.
UNSUNG’s vision has attracted Paul Fireman, who served as Chairman and CEO of Reebok International for more than 25 years and helped build the company into one of the world’s leading athletic brands. Fireman has agreed to chair UNSUNG’s advisory board, bringing decades of experience identifying underserved athletes and consumers and building products, marketing and culture around them.
Also joining UNSUNG as a brand advisor is former Boston Bruins captain and Stanley Cup champion Patrice Bergeron, whose career reflects the brand’s belief that the best athletes make everyone around them better. His leadership, commitment to his teammates and deep ties to Boston make him a natural fit for UNSUNG’s mission to champion the next generation of team-sport athletes.
“Throughout my career, I learned that being part of a team means showing up for one another, putting in the work and accomplishing more together than you ever could alone,” said Bergeron. “Those lessons stay with you long after you stop playing. I’m proud to support UNSUNG’s mission to help the next generation build confidence, form lasting friendships and experience what it truly means to be part of a team.”
That same commitment to the team is what O’Neill hopes athletes will recognize in UNSUNG.
“There is a kind of athlete every great team recognizes immediately,” said O’Neill, co-founder and president of UNSUNG. “They compete like hell. They hold people accountable. They set the tone, and they make the people beside them better. They never ask for the credit, but every team knows what they bring. UNSUNG is for them.”
The UNSUNG Snapback Trainer launches in four colorways, retails for $188 and is available in unisex sizing at UNSUNG.COM.
The Snapback is the first step in UNSUNG’s broader vision to build a leading sports brand rooted in high performance, team culture and social purpose. The company will create exceptional products for athletes, celebrate the people and values that make teams successful, and commit a portion of revenues to support organizations that use the power of sports to give more young people the opportunity to play, develop and succeed on and off the field.
